What Is Marble?
Marble is a metamorphic rock. This means it is created deep below the earth’s surface, where it is subject to intense heat and pressure, changing the physical and chemical structure of the original rock. Metamorphic rocks are split into two categories: foliated and non-foliated. Marble is a non-foliated rock, meaning it does not possess texture or fault lines. This makes it valuable for use in architecture and sculpture.
Marble comes in a wide range of colors including beige, white, and cream, but also gray, brown, black, and even green. It also comes in a wide range of sizes and shapes. Small mosaics pieces include 1×2 inch rectangles and 2×2 inch squares. Large slabs come in 12×12, 12×24, and 18×18 inch sizes.
For additional variation, choose between polished, honed, tumbled, and brushed finishes. A polished finish lends well to formal designs, while rougher finishes lend to natural and rustic looks. If you select polished tile, keep in mind that some products are too slippery for flooring applications and are only recommended for walls. Manufacturers will list this under their product information.
Maintain marble floors by sweeping or vacuuming, and follow-up with a damp mop. Avoid harsh cleaners that are abrasive or highly acidic, since these can wear away at the tile’s sealant and damage the marble. Instead, use pH-balanced products or cleaners specifically formulated for marble surfaces. Additional maintenance includes resealing every 6-12 months. Also, after years of wear and tear, marble can begin to look dull and develop scratches. Rather than replacing your tile surface, simply refinish to bring it back to a like-new state.
