Benefits of Oak Flooring

Oak is readily available throughout the U.S., which makes it one of the more affordable hardwood flooring options. It’s a durable wood, ranking in the middle of the Janka hardness scale, and it is versatile enough to look great in traditional and modern homes alike.

There are two common varieties of oak – red and white. Each has unique characteristics that are worth considering when selecting oak flooring for your home.

Red Oak

Red oak flooring has a wide grain pattern and a warm, reddish brown color that makes it a natural fit in traditional homes. It has a Janka hardness rating of 1290, meaning that it is durable enough to resist scratches and dents but soft enough to easily cut and install.

Red oak is an open-grained wood, meaning that it will take stain very well. However, it is also more susceptible to damage by standing water or high humidity. It’s typically less expensive than white oak, although the prices are comparable and vary depending on availability.

White Oak

White oak has subtler graining than red oak, making it a more popular option for contemporary and modern homes. The colors are very similar, but white oak tends to be a bit darker with yellow undertones versus red.

It has a higher Janka rating at 1360, and the closed-grain wood makes it more resistant to moisture. Despite the closed-grain, white oak does stain well and is particularly well suited to the grey color stains that have become popular in recent years.
