Berber carpet has been popular in Grapevine homes for a long time. It’s a durable carpet that is both stylish and tough enough to stand up to the traffic of active families. With all the advantages, there are also some disadvantages to consider before installing Berber carpet in your home. Learn more about the pros and cons of Berber here.
Advantages of Berber Carpet
Berber carpet has a unique loop pile that makes it immediately recognizable. Originally named for the Berber people of North Africa who are known for their looped rugs, commercial and residential Berber carpet has many similar characteristics. People love Berber for its durability and stain-resistance. Spills will not penetrate the fibers as quickly as cut piles rugs.
Depending on the fiber you select, Berber can be very soft and luxurious underfoot. Wool and nylon are common fibers for residential use. Polyester and olefin are great for commercial spaces. These may not be as soft, but they will stand up to wear and tear in high traffic areas and look great for many years. Berber is also known for being a cost-effective option in carpeting. But this, too, is directly related to the fiber you select.
Disadvantages of Berber Carpet
Due to the loop pile of Berber carpet, there are some unique disadvantages to this floor covering. It can be prone to snagging, and when left untreated, those snags can cause the carpet to run or unravel. Pet claws or high-heeled shoes are particularly risky on Berber. Cats are even known for using Berber as a scratching post, so homes with pets need to be aware of these risks.
Another seemingly contradictory disadvantage of Berber carpet is the risk of staining. While spills will not penetrate the loop pile very quickly, once they do, they can be very difficult to remove. Cleaning up spills immediately will help avoid stains, and selecting a Berber carpet in a popular flecked color variation, as pictured above, will help hide any imperfections.
